So I was feeling a little blue and decided that what I needed more than anything to cheer me up was yet more books. :cP So I spent about an hour in town today and came home with 5 new beauties that ought to keep me occupied for at least the next little while.

One of them is called "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," by Jonathan Safran Foer and it's a mystery involving a 9-year-old boy named Oskar whose father was killed on 9/11. Oskarfinds a key that belonged to his father and he decides to try and find which lock in all of New York it opens. It's absolutely mesmerizing so far...I'm only a couple of chapters into it, but I can tell I'm going to end up finishing this one in a day or so. It's beautifully written, full of imagery and imagination.

I also bought a collection of short stories by Susanna Clarke (who also wrote Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell), "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time," "The Alchemyst," the first book in a series about Nicholas Flamel (hello, HP world, I can't quit you!), and what looks like a kick-ass ghost story called "The Keep."

So yeah. I'm happy. I'm easy like that. :c)

The Susannah Clarke stories aren't bad, actually. Whimsical, and in her distinctive style.
The Curious Incident... is absolutely brilliant. VERY different, very funny, and very poignant. I loved it.

"The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" I adored. I recommend it to everyone I possibly can...

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close has been lying on my Shelf of Shame (aka stack of still-to-be-read books) for about a year now. Meeep.

ETA: Oh, and I came very close just this past week to ordering the first of the books on Nicholas Flamel myself. ;)

Nicholas Flamel... I am confused. Is this an actual HP tie-in, or is it about the Nicholas Flamel on whom HP Flamel was based?

Not an HP tie-in, just a series based on the real Flamel, who I am embarrassed to admit I didn't realize was anyone other than a Rowling creation. :cP

It caught my eye because of HP, but that's just on account of my ignorance. :c)

Haha, I buy tons of books as well when I want to cheer myself up! Problem is, I never have time to read them :P

"Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" is so, so, SO GOOD. Prepare to cry forever. I love Jonathan Safran Foer, haha. "The Curious Incident..." is great as well! And I've been meaning to read "Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell" forever, but I can't seem to get around to it :/ Basically, all this translates to "you have good taste," lol.
